Density — Describe

Question
Question

How do you determine the density of a liquid, a regularly shaped solid, and an irregularly shaped solid that sinks?

Answer

For a liquid: measure its mass using a balance and its volume using a measuring cylinder, then calculate ρ = m/V. For a regular solid: measure its mass using a balance and calculate its volume from measured dimensions (e.g. length × width × height for a cuboid), then calculate ρ = m/V. For an irregular solid that sinks: measure its mass, then find its volume by displacement (lower it into a partially filled measuring cylinder, or use a displacement can, and measure the volume of liquid displaced), then calculate ρ = m/V.
