Turning effect of forces — Apply

Question
Question

How do you apply the principle of moments to a beam balanced on a pivot with one force on each side?

Answer

For the beam to be balanced (in equilibrium), the clockwise moment must equal the anticlockwise moment about the pivot: F1 × d1 = F2 × d2, where d1 and d2 are the perpendicular distances of each force from the pivot.
