What are the distinguishing properties of solids, liquids and gases?

Solids have a fixed shape and a fixed volume, and cannot be compressed. Liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container, and are very difficult to compress. Gases have no fixed shape and no fixed volume, expanding to completely fill their container, and can be compressed easily.
