Particle model — Describe
Question
Question
How are particles arranged, spaced and how do they move in solids, liquids and gases?
Answer
In a solid, particles are closely packed in a regular, ordered arrangement, held by strong forces, and only vibrate about fixed positions. In a liquid, particles are also close together but arranged randomly, with weaker forces, so they can move/slide past one another. In a gas, particles are widely spaced with negligible forces between them and move rapidly and randomly in all directions. (Particle diagrams show this as: solid - regular grid of touching dots; liquid - randomly packed touching dots; gas - few dots spread far apart.)
