Question
What happens to the temperature of an object if the rate at which it receives energy differs from the rate at which it transfers energy away?
Answer
If an object receives energy at a greater rate than it loses it, it has a net energy gain and its temperature rises. If it receives energy at a lower rate than it loses it, it has a net energy loss and its temperature falls. If the two rates are equal, the object's temperature remains constant.
