How do wavelength and gap size affect diffraction through a gap?

Diffraction (spreading of the wave) is most noticeable when the gap width is similar to or smaller than the wavelength; if the gap is much wider than the wavelength, the wave passes through with little spreading and travels mostly in its original direction.
