General properties of waves — Describe

Question
Question

What is meant by wave motion, and how can it be demonstrated using ropes, springs and water waves?

Answer

Wave motion is the transfer of energy from one place to another through vibrations (oscillations), without any net transfer of matter. Shaking one end of a stretched rope or spring sends a wave along it, in which each part vibrates about a fixed position but does not travel with the wave. Similarly, dipping a finger repeatedly into water, or using a ripple tank, produces water waves that carry energy outward across the surface while the water itself only moves up and down.
