How does the speed of sound compare in solids, liquids and gases?

In general, sound travels fastest through solids, slower through liquids, and slowest through gases, because particles are more closely packed together (and more strongly bonded) in solids than in liquids, and more closely packed in liquids than in gases, so vibrations are passed between particles more quickly.
