What is the difference between magnetic and non-magnetic materials?

Magnetic materials, such as iron, steel, nickel and cobalt, can be magnetised and are attracted by a magnet. Non-magnetic materials, such as wood, plastic, copper and aluminium, cannot be magnetised and are not attracted by a magnet.
