The atom — Know
Question
Question
How do atoms form positive ions and negative ions?
Answer
A neutral atom has equal numbers of protons and electrons. If an atom loses one or more electrons, it has more protons than electrons, giving it an overall positive charge, so it becomes a positive ion. If an atom gains one or more electrons, it has more electrons than protons, giving it an overall negative charge, so it becomes a negative ion.
