Detection of radioactivity — Use

Question
Question

How is a corrected count rate for a radioactive source found using measurements of background radiation?

Answer

The count rate is measured with no source present to find the background count rate. The count rate is then measured with the source present. The corrected count rate is found by subtracting the background count rate from the count rate measured with the source present: corrected count rate = count rate with source present - background count rate.
