Why does an object in an elliptical orbit travel faster when it is closer to the Sun?

By the conservation of energy, an object in an elliptical orbit travels faster when it is closer to the Sun (and slower when further away), since its gravitational potential energy decreases and its kinetic energy increases as it approaches the Sun.
