Turning effect of forces — Describe
Question
Question
How can you demonstrate experimentally that there is no resultant moment on an object in equilibrium?
Answer
Balance a metre rule horizontally on a pivot placed at its centre, then hang known weights at measured distances on each side, adjusting the weights or distances until the rule is horizontal and stationary. Calculating the moments (weight × distance) on each side shows that the sum of clockwise moments equals the sum of anticlockwise moments, confirming zero resultant moment.
