How does evaporation occur, in terms of particles?

Evaporation occurs when the most energetic particles near the surface of a liquid have enough kinetic energy to overcome the attractive forces of neighbouring particles and escape from the surface into the gas phase, even at temperatures below the liquid's boiling point.
