Conduction — Describe
Question
Question
How does thermal conduction occur in solids?
Answer
In all solids, particles at the hot end vibrate with greater energy/amplitude; these vibrations are passed on to neighbouring particles through the lattice, transferring energy along the solid. In metals, conduction is much faster because free (delocalised) electrons gain kinetic energy at the hot end, move quickly through the metal, and transfer energy through collisions, carrying heat far more effectively than lattice vibrations alone.
