Conduction — Describe

Question
Question

Why is thermal conduction poor in gases and in most liquids?

Answer

In gases, particles are far apart with few collisions between them, so energy is rarely passed from particle to particle. In most liquids, particles are not held in a fixed lattice and there are no free electrons, so energy transfer relies on relatively infrequent particle collisions. In both cases this makes conduction slow and inefficient compared with solids, especially metals.
