The transformer — Describe
Question
Question
Describe how transformers are used in the high-voltage transmission of electricity.
Answer
At the power station, a step-up transformer increases the voltage (while reducing the current) for transmission along the National Grid; step-down transformers are then used nearer the point of use to reduce the voltage to safer, usable levels for consumers. Transmitting at high voltage, and correspondingly low current, greatly reduces the power lost as heat in the transmission cables.
